5 things to consider before booking an accommodation in the Blue Mountains National Park
1) Which activities are you going to do?
This will be the most important factor! You’ll probably want to be as close as possible to the main attractions you’re visiting, it all depends on your itinerary.
If you’re keen on the Three Sisters, Scenic World, and Echo Point, you’ll want to base yourself in Katoomba, Leura, or Wentworth Falls.
If you’ve already seen that and want to focus more on nature, consider Wentworth Falls or Blackheath – both are next door to epic hikes in the area.
Here’s a list of things to do in the Blue Mountains if you want some ideas!
2) How are you getting there?
If you’re going via train or bus from Sydney, definitely stay in either Katoomba or Leura.
They’re close to the main attractions and there’s the hop on hop off bus too. It might sound like a tourist thing but it’s actually very cost-effective, plus it can get you around easily.
It connects Katoomba and Leura (29 stops total) and the buses pass through every 30 minutes. Plus they even have a package that includes unlimited rides in Scenic World!
Check the hop on hop off bus here.
But if you’re bringing a car, it’s worth staying in towns like Blackheath or Mount Victoria (the latter is more remote but lovely if you want to unplug).
More so if it’s not your first time visiting the area! If you’ve already visited Scenic World, Three Sisters, etc, definitely consider staying somewhere other than Katoomba.
3) The season of your visit
The peak season in the Blue Mountains is during school holidays and pretty much any long weekend. Its proximity to Sydney also means people will come flooding whenever they get the chance!
If you plan on visiting during that time, it might be worth staying in Wentworth Falls or Blackheath to avoid crowds.
Also know that accommodation prices might be higher than usual and you will have to book well ahead of time!
Now, the low season is winter and most weekdays outside of school holidays. If you’re looking for the cheapest time to visit, go on a weekday in winter!
Accommodation prices usually drop during that time, but bring layers because it will be COLD. Like, colder than you’d expect (it snowed once during our stay in early winter!).
If you’re flexible, mid-week stays in shoulder seasons (March-May or September-November) give you a good mix of decent prices and great weather.
4) How long are you staying?
If it’s your first time, we recommend staying in Katoomba or Leura for at least a weekend (2 full days) to cover the main highlights and squeeze in a hike or two.
The sweet spot is 5-7 days though. But we stayed for 2 months and couldn’t get enough!
That said, the length of your stay will of course impact your budget.
So if you want to stay more time in the area without breaking the bank, there are great budget-friendly accommodations in all towns, but the YHA hostel is our favourite.
If hostels are not your thing, the Grand View Hotel in Wentworth Falls is a great alternative. Or the High Mountains Motor Inn in Blackheath if you don’t mind the drive and want to be closer to the hiking trails.
5) Policies of the accommodation
Booking somewhere flexible will save you so much stress!
If you’re planning well ahead of time, look for accommodations that offer free cancellation, refunds, etc. just in case your plans change.
We’re big fans of these sites for those reasons – most of them offer flexible policies that really help with planning the trip:
Hostelworld for budget-friendly accommodation.
Booking and Expedia for all kinds of stays – most accommodations offer rooms in both sites, so compare the two to find the best deals!
Top Tips
During the warmer months, fire bans are common in the Blue Mountains due to the high risk of bushfires.
If you’re staying somewhere that offers outdoor BBQs or fire pits, check local fire restrictions before lighting anything. Many accommodations have this info handy.
Also, if you’re visiting during fire season (roughly October to April), keep an eye on fire alerts. Download the “Fires Near Me” app for real-time updates, it’s a lifesaver!
Did you know?
The Wollemi Pine was thought to be extinct until 1994, when it was discovered hiding in a remote part of the Blue Mountains.
It’s a prehistoric tree that has been around for over 200 million years!
It’s critically endangered and nobody knows where the originals are located (only 46 adult trees remain in the wild, they have to be protected!) but you can check out some descendants at the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden in Mount Tomah.
