Sydney to Kiama

Huskisson

Drive: 45km from Kiama, around 40 mins

Huskisson is the main town in Jervis Bay and the perfect base for the weekend.

Most people stay here for the convenience, but there are also stunning glamping options in the bush and beachfront campgrounds in Booderee National Park if you want something more special.

Things to do in Huskisson

  • Check in to Paperbark Camp, a stunning glamping resort set in the bush near the river with safari-style tents. Overnight

Where to stay in Huskisson

For Huskisson, we’d start with Huskisson Beach Motel as the best overall option, Husky Sea Breeze Apartment if you want something directly opposite the beach with a bit more space, and Simply THE Best Waterviews over the park if you’re after a budget option with decent views.

Saturday night is when you want to splash out a bit on dinner, and The Gunyah is absolutely worth it.

If the sky is clear, finish the night with a stargazing tour at Moona Moona Beach, which is genuinely one of the coolest things you can do in Jervis Bay.

Where to stay near Jervis Bay

If you’re staying a second night, Callala Sunrise Pet Friendly is our pick as the best overall option with a quick walk to the beach, Drifters @ Callala Beach if you’re travelling with kids and want more space, and Salty Shores Jervis Bay if you want something simple and budget-friendly just 3 mins from the beach.

Day 3: Wildlife Tours > Return to Sydney (Sunday)

  • Distance: ~190km
  • Drive time: ~2.5 hours

Spend your Sunday morning in the water with dolphins or whales, grab a final brunch in Huskisson, then head back to Sydney via the same stunning coastal route.

Morning Wildlife & Water

Jervis Bay is famous for its marine life, with over 100 resident bottlenose dolphins and humpback whales passing through during migration season.

If you time your trip right, swimming with humpback whales is genuinely a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Planning your weekend road trip

Best time to go

Jervis Bay is beautiful year-round, but the best time depends on what you want to do.

If you’re keen to swim with humpback whales, you’ll need to visit during migration season, which runs from June to July (northward migration) and September to November (southward migration). September to November is our pick because the water is warmer and the weather is more reliable.

For beach weather, December to March is the go. The water is properly warm, the beaches are buzzing, and you’ll have long summer days to make the most of it.

If you want to avoid crowds, visit in May or October. You’ll still get decent weather, but the beaches and national park will be much quieter.

What to pack

  • Reef-safe sunscreen and a hat because the UV is no joke on those white sand beaches
  • Snorkel gear if you’ve got your own, otherwise you can hire it in Huskisson
  • A wetsuit or rash vest if you’re planning to swim with whales or do any longer snorkelling
  • Binoculars for dolphin and whale spotting from the cliffs
  • A picnic blanket and esky for beach days because some of the best beaches don’t have cafes nearby
  • Bug spray for sunset walks and stargazing tours
  • Your national parks pass if you’ve got one, otherwise you’ll need to pay the entry fee at Booderee

Top tips

Book your whale swimming tour or dolphin cruise as soon as you lock in your dates. These tours fill up fast during peak season and you don’t want to miss out.

If you’re camping at Green Patch, arrive early on Friday night or book ahead online. It’s one of the most popular campgrounds in NSW and sites go quickly on weekends.

The Gunyah restaurant books out weeks in advance for Saturday nights. If you want to eat there, book as soon as you’ve sorted your accommodation.

Download the Booderee National Park map before you go because phone reception is patchy inside the park.

Fill up with petrol in Huskisson or Nowra. There are no petrol stations inside the national park and the last thing you want is to run low on a Sunday afternoon.
