Gold Coast Hinterland Road Trip: The PERFECT Weekend Itinerary + Free Map

A stunning view of Purlingbrook Falls cascading down a steep, rugged cliff covered in patches of greenery and lichen in the Gold Coast Hinterland. The waterfall flows powerfully from the top, surrounded by dense rainforest foliage. The dramatic rock formations and lush vegetation highlight the untouched beauty of this natural wonder.

Rainforest canopy walks, glow worm caves and a sunrise balloon flight, all within an hour of the Gold Coast’s high rises. The hinterland is the best 2 days you can miss in South East Queensland.

So this is the weekend we’d do: about 235km from the Gold Coast, with Friday night on Tamborine Mountain and Saturday night at Springbrook.

  • Friday: Tamborine Mountain, with the distillery, Gallery Walk and sunset at Hang Gliders Lookout.
  • Saturday: A sunrise balloon over the Scenic Rim, the Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk and Curtis Falls, then Purling Brook Falls and the glow worms at Natural Bridge.
  • Sunday: Best of All Lookout and Twin Falls at Springbrook, lunch at Burleigh Heads, then Currumbin Rock Pools.
  • Bonus Monday: Whale watching from the Broadwater in season, then a stroll along Surfers Paradise.

Road trip snapshot

  • Distance: About 235km from the Gold Coast, plus the drive home
  • Drive time: About 4 hrs 30 min in total, plus 30 min back up to the plateau on Saturday night
  • Areas covered: Tamborine Mountain (Eagle Heights), Scenic Rim (Canungra Valley), Tamborine National Park, Springbrook National Park, Natural Bridge, Burleigh Heads, Currumbin, Optional: Gold Coast (Broadwater and Surfers Paradise)
  • Best time: April to September for cooler weather and clearer lookouts, with whale season on the coast from June to November
  • Vehicle: 2WD is fine, all sealed roads (Springbrook Road is steep and winding)
  • Pet-friendly: No, dogs aren’t allowed on the national park walks
  • Good for: Couples and friends who want waterfalls, wine and a proper rainforest escape without a long drive

Day 1: Tamborine Mountain (Friday Afternoon)

  • Distance: ~45km from the Gold Coast
  • Drive time: ~50 min

Friday is the easy one. It’s about 45km from the Gold Coast via Nerang or Oxenford (or around 75km and 1 hr 15 min to 1 hr 30 min from Brisbane up the M1), so you’ll be settled on the mountain by dinner.

Tamborine Mountain (Eagle Heights)

Tamborine Mountain is a cool, leafy plateau that feels a world away from the coast below.

Eagle Heights is the best base for the weekend, because the village strip, the distillery and your rainforest bed are all within a few minutes of each other.

Get $220 off Starlink. Ends 6 November. Claim your $220 credit.

Things to do in Tamborine Mountain

You won’t fit all of this into one Friday afternoon, so get up here early if you can.

  • Sample local spirits and liqueurs at Tamborine Mountain Distillery if it’s still open, but check hours first because it typically closes late afternoon and a late Friday arrival may miss it.
  • Stroll Gallery Walk, the main village strip at Eagle Heights, past galleries, boutiques and cafes (shop hours vary and many close late afternoon, so check before you go).
  • Watch the sunset from Hang Gliders Lookout on Main Western Road, where hang gliders launch off the escarpment and the views run inland for miles. We reckon they’re unreal. Rotary Lookout is further up the same road if it’s busy, with benches and binoculars.
  • Walk to Cedar Creek Falls, an easy 500m return to the lookout, with a steeper track down to rock pools that are great for a swim (bring reef shoes). Parking is limited until May 2027 and the pools close after wet weather, so check Queensland Parks alerts first.
  • Book a guided tour of the glow worm cave at Cedar Creek Estate and stay for a tasting at the cellar door. It’s handy if you can’t make Natural Bridge at dusk. More info here.

Where to stay in Tamborine Mountain

We’d start with Songbirds Rainforest Retreat as the best overall option, then Witches Falls Cottages if you’re travelling with kids or want more space. If you just need a simple, cheaper bed, Eagle Heights Mountain Hotel does the job.

Staying longer on the coast? Our Gold Coast itinerary has plenty more ideas for a longer trip!

Day 2: Scenic Rim > Tamborine National Park > Springbrook > Natural Bridge (Saturday)

  • Distance: ~127km, plus the climb back up to your stay
  • Drive time: ~2 hrs 25 min, plus about 30 min back up to the plateau

Saturday is the big day. You’ll float over the Scenic Rim at sunrise, walk through the rainforest canopy on Tamborine, then chase waterfalls and glow worms around Springbrook.

Morning in the Scenic Rim (Canungra Valley)

Drive: 16km from Tamborine Mountain (Eagle Heights), around 22 min

Canungra Valley is where the Scenic Rim’s volcanic ridgelines really start to show off.

There’s heaps more out here, which we’ve covered in our guide to things to do in the Scenic Rim, but a balloon flight gives you the whole view in 1 hit.

Things to do in the Scenic Rim

  • Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Flight over the Scenic Rim: You start pre-dawn for a sunrise flight, then tuck into a champagne breakfast and a cellar door visit at O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards. We did this one ourselves, our pilot had over 1,000 hours of experience, and breakfast and the cellar door were both included, so book well ahead and keep your Saturday flexible in case weather cancels the flight. 4 hrs including transfers, flight, breakfast and cellar door
  • Canungra: This little village is the gateway to the Scenic Rim, and it’s right on your way back to the mountain. Grab a coffee at El Social or a pub feed at the Canungra Hotel, or say hello at Mountview Alpaca Farm next to the vineyard (check hours first). 1 hr
  • Rosins Lookout: It’s 19km and about 23 minutes from Canungra along Beechmont Road, a worthwhile detour for views across the Numinbah Valley to Springbrook and Wollumbin, and you might catch paragliders launching here. 30 min
  • O’Reilly’s Tree Top Walk: Balloon cancelled, or keeping your feet on the ground? Head 36km and about 55 minutes up the winding road from Canungra into Lamington National Park for this free walk across suspension bridges in the rainforest canopy. More info here. 2 hrs

Keen to spend longer around here? Have a read of our Gold Coast things to do guide for more ideas within easy reach!

Tamborine National Park

Drive: 26km from the Scenic Rim (Canungra Valley), around 24 min

You’re back on the mountain for lunch, with a canopy walk, a waterfall and a cafe all within a few minutes of each other.

It’s a nice slow patch after the early start, so don’t rush it.

Things to do in Tamborine National Park

  • Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk: Walk the elevated steel bridges through the rainforest canopy for the best canopy views of the hinterland. 1.5 hrs
  • Curtis Falls: This short walk drops down to a pretty waterfall, and it’s an easy one close to the road. 1 hr
  • Wild Plum Kitchen: Grab lunch at this family-run cafe on Gallery Walk, a local favourite that keeps you on the mountain between the Skywalk and Curtis Falls (check opening hours first), and add a tasting at the Queensland Wine Centre if you’ve got time, because we sampled local wines there. 1 hr

Springbrook National Park (Purling Brook Falls)

From Tamborine National Park, it’s 58km and about 1 hr 6 min

Get $220 off Starlink. Ends 6 November. Claim your $220 credit.

Springbrook is the wildest part of the hinterland, a high rainforest plateau that’s part of the Gondwana Rainforests World Heritage Area.

Purling Brook Falls is the main event here, and we reckon it’s worth the drive on its own.

Things to do in Springbrook National Park

  • Purling Brook Falls: Park at Gwongorella Picnic Area for the main western lookout and the suspension bridge at the base of this 109m waterfall, the most dramatic fall in the area. Part of the circuit and the Settlement Day-Use Area are closed for upgrades until at least September 2027, so check Queensland Parks alerts first. 1.5 hrs

Where to stay in Springbrook National Park

Our pick is The Mouses House Rainforest Retreat as the best overall option, with spa-bath chalets on the plateau and dinner hampers so you don’t have to go out again. Purling Brook Falls Gwongorella suits families, and The Bower at Purling Brook is a good extra option if the others are booked out.

Springbrook is just the start, and our big Gold Coast guide has plenty more to fill the gaps!

Natural Bridge

Drive: 27km from Purling Brook Falls, about 31 min around the range, and you’ll drive back up to the plateau after dark, so take it slow

Time your arrival for dusk, because Natural Bridge only really comes alive once the light fades.

Things to do in Natural Bridge

  • Natural Bridge Glow Worm Cave: This short circuit walk leads to a cave arch over a waterfall, and the glow worms light up after dark (bring a torch for the walk but keep it off in the cave). 1 hr

Day 3: Springbrook > Burleigh Heads > Currumbin (Sunday)

  • Distance: ~39km
  • Drive time: ~50 min

Sunday starts with lookouts and waterfalls on the plateau, then rolls down the range to the beach for lunch and a headland walk.

Morning at Springbrook National Park (Best of All Lookout, Twin Falls, Canyon Lookout)

Drive: a short hop along Springbrook Road from your stay

These 3 stops sit close together, and the morning light makes the plateau look its best.

Things to do in Springbrook National Park

  • Best of All Lookout: This classic Springbrook outlook looks over the Numinbah Valley and the Border Ranges toward Mt Warning/Wollumbin, and it’s best in the morning light. 45 min
  • Twin Falls Circuit: This varied circuit walk takes you under and behind waterfalls through rainforest on the plateau. 2 hrs
  • Canyon Lookout: A short walk leads to a lookout over the plateau’s canyon with the Gold Coast skyline in the distance, a good final stop with a different perspective. 45 min

Burleigh Heads

From Springbrook National Park, it’s 30km and about 39 min

After 2 days of rainforest and waterfalls, a beachfront lunch hits the spot.

Get $220 off Starlink. Ends 6 November. Claim your $220 credit.

If the coast gets its hooks into you, our list of coastal road trips that’ll have you buying a van has plenty more to chew on.

Things to do in Burleigh Heads

  • Burleigh Pavilion: Have a beachfront lunch overlooking Burleigh Heads, and check opening hours and book ahead because Sundays get busy. 1.5 hrs

Burleigh Heads / Currumbin

Drive: 9km from Burleigh Heads, around 11 min

This is a gentle way to wrap up the weekend, with a headland walk and an optional dip before the drive home.

Things to do in Burleigh Heads / Currumbin

  • Burleigh Head National Park coastal walk: This coastal headland walk wraps around Burleigh Head with ocean lookouts and patches of rainforest, a short and easy way to finish the weekend by the sea. 1.5 hrs
  • Currumbin Rock Pools: This optional swim stop on Currumbin Creek is a local spot to cool off before heading home, but check conditions and water levels first, especially after rain. 1 hr

Bonus: Gold Coast

  • Distance: ~22km
  • Drive time: ~30 min

If you can steal a Monday, head for the Broadwater and spend the day on the water and the sand.

Gold Coast (Broadwater and Surfers Paradise)

From Burleigh Heads / Currumbin, it’s 22km and about 30 min

Seeing humpbacks on their migration is one of the best wildlife experiences on the Gold Coast, and we loved it.

Things to do in the Gold Coast

  • Humpback Whale Watching Cruise from the Broadwater: We joined this cruise to see humpbacks on their migration, and the season only runs June to November, so check the operator’s schedule and book ahead. 3 hrs
  • Surfers Paradise Beach: We walked and relaxed on the beach and promenade after the cruise, a laid-back final stop before heading home. 1.5 hrs

Planning your weekend road trip through the Gold Coast hinterland

Best time to go

We reckon April to September is the sweet spot, with cooler days, clear mornings for the balloon and lookouts, and humpbacks on the coast from June.

Summer brings heat and storms but the waterfalls flow best after rain, and our guide to the best time to visit the Gold Coast breaks it down month by month.

What to pack

  • A torch for the Natural Bridge walk (keep it off inside the cave)
  • A warm layer for the pre-dawn balloon launch and cool nights on the plateau
  • Grippy walking shoes for wet rainforest tracks and waterfall steps
  • Swimmers and a quick-dry towel for Currumbin Rock Pools
  • A rain jacket, because mist and showers roll over Springbrook fast
  • Sunscreen, a hat and a refillable water bottle for the Burleigh headland
  • Snacks and a full tank of fuel before you head up the range

Top tips

Book the balloon flight first and build the rest of the weekend around it. Operators cancel in wind or low cloud, so keep Saturday flexible.

Springbrook Road is steep with tight bends, so give yourself extra time, especially on Saturday night after Natural Bridge. Watch for wildlife on the road in the dark.

Get $220 off Starlink. Ends 6 November. Claim your $220 credit.

Fill up the tank and buy snacks before you climb the range, and don’t count on solid mobile reception on the plateau.

Book Burleigh Pavilion ahead for Sunday lunch, because the beachfront fills up fast.

Check water levels and conditions before swimming at Currumbin Rock Pools, especially after heavy rain.

FAQs

Can you do a Gold Coast hinterland road trip in a day?

You can see the highlights of Tamborine Mountain or Springbrook in a day trip, but trying to cover both is a rush. We reckon 2 nights is the sweet spot, mainly so you can see the glow worms at Natural Bridge after dark and catch the Springbrook lookouts in the morning light.

Do you need a 4WD for the Gold Coast hinterland?

No, every stop on this route is on sealed roads and a normal 2WD car is fine. Springbrook Road is steep and winding, so take it slow, especially after dark.

What is the best time of year to visit the Gold Coast hinterland?

April to September gives you cooler weather and clearer lookouts, and June to November adds whale season on the coast for the bonus Monday. Waterfalls flow best after summer rain, but storms can close tracks, so check park alerts before you go.

What time should you visit Natural Bridge to see the glow worms?

Go after dark, when the glow worms light up the cave arch over the waterfall. Bring a torch for the walk but keep it off inside the cave.

Sort these out before your road trip!
