5 Cool Things To Do In Port Clinton (SA): The Gateway To The Yorke Peninsula
I was once one of the many travellers who, upon driving down the eastern shore of South Australia’s Yorke Peninsula, would pass the Port Clinton turn-off without a second thought.
Big mistake.
Sitting a 90-minute drive from Adelaide, this hidden gem of the Yorke Peninsula is a small town offering more than just a quiet retreat.
There are beautiful landscapes, lots of mangroves, and a few things you can only do there – like crabbing or hiking a section of the “Walk the Yorke” trek.
Plus, it makes for the perfect base for exploring the Yorke Peninsula!
This guide will help you discover the best things to do in Port Clinton, where to stay, and how to make the most of your visit. Let’s dive in!

5 Things to do in Port Clinton (SA)
We recognise the traditional owners of this land, the Narungga people.
1) Go crabbing and/or fishing
The waters around Port Clinton are ripe with blue swimmer crabs – crabbing is an absolute must. Plus you don’t need to go deep to catch them.
The fishing is just as good. You can catch whiting, nannies, flatheads, etc. You can also take your boat further into the water and snag some tuna, snapper, nannygai and the famous King George whiting.
More info about the boat ramps and fees here.
If you’re into crabbing, visit in months with an “R” in them (September to April) when the blue swimmer crabs are most plentiful.
2) Do the coastal walk
It’s a 6.6 km hiking trail (one way) from Port Clinton to Price, along the stunning coast. It’s the starting point of the Walk the Yorke, a network of ~500 km of trails and roads connecting the whole of the Yorke Peninsula.
The track winds between remnant coastal scrub and farmland before descending via a 78-step staircase onto a plain with wombat burrows.
3) Enjoy the views from the lookout
Port Clinton’s location on the Yorke Peninsula and nearly at the northern tip of Gulf St Vincent means splendid coastal scenery.
But to really appreciate the beauty of this setting amidst fertile farmland, take a drive to the lookout point up in the low range behind!
In the town itself, it’s hard to miss the long line of low red cliffs rising above the mangroves at the southern end of the great curve of the bay around which the township of Port Clinton has evolved.
4) Birdwatching
Every summer, thousands of birds travel up to 25,000 km from the Arctic Circle to these mud flats to fatten up so they can fly back to the northern hemisphere to breed!
It’s quite a spectacle, we even saw a Red Knot changing from its standard drab, greyish colouring into brick-red breeding plumage right here in Port Clinton.
5) Witness a Dodge Tide
Port Clinton is one of only three zones in the world (along with the Torres Strait and Gulf of Mexico) to experience the Dodge Tide phenomenon.
Ok, it sounds much more interesting than it actually is – the water practically stands still.
While it’s a thrill to think of watching something that most of the rest of the world hasn’t seen, the reality is that watching a Dodge Tide is a bit boring… BUT interesting nonetheless.
When is the best time to visit Port Clinton (South Australia)?
The best time to visit Port Clinton is during the warmer months, from around September to April. This is when the weather is nice and warm, making it perfect for crabbing, fishing, and enjoying the beach.
Summer can get pretty hot, but it’s also when the water is warmest and the days are long, so you can really make the most of the outdoors.
Spring and autumn are a bit cooler, but still great for outdoor activities without the summer heat.
Winter’s pretty quiet, and while it’s not the best for beach activities, it’s peaceful if you’re looking for a relaxing getaway.

Getting to Port Clinton from Adelaide is pretty straightforward. It’s about a 125-kilometre drive, so it’ll take you roughly an hour and a half to two hours, depending on traffic.
The drive is pretty easy, and the roads are well-maintained. There are also a few places to stop along the way if you want to grab a bite or take a quick break.
From Adelaide, Hop onto the A1 (Port Wakefield Road) heading north. This is the main road out of the city that takes you toward the Yorke Peninsula.
Stay on the A1 until you reach the turnoff for Port Clinton. This will be after you pass through Port Wakefield.
After Port Wakefield, keep an eye out for signs to Clinton or Port Clinton, and you’ll take a left turn onto Clinton Road. Follow this road until you reach the town.

Did you know?
Port Clinton is a fascinating spot for marine life, thanks to its unique ecosystem.
The area is surrounded by mangroves and seagrass meadows, which play a crucial role in keeping marine life cycles turning.
These habitats provide essential shelter and breeding grounds for a variety of species, including the blue swimmer crab and many fish species.
The mangroves, in particular, are like nurseries for young fish and crabs, offering protection from predators and a rich food supply. As these young creatures grow, they move out into the open waters, contributing to the local fishing economy and maintaining the balance of the ecosystem.
The seagrass meadows are also vital, as they help stabilize the seabed and support a diverse range of life, from small invertebrates to larger fish.
