Black Rock (Kununurra, Western Australia) is a seasonal, 30-metre-high waterfall… and one of those hidden gems you have to see to believe.
It gets its name from the striking black cliffs that tower around a small but deep pool at the base of the falls. These cliffs have been stained by minerals over time, giving them their unique colour.
The falls are a seasonal wonder, only flowing during the wet season when the roads can become impassable. But even after the waterfall slows to a trickle, the pool below remains for months – perfect for a refreshing swim in the heat of the East Kimberley!

How to get to Black Rock Falls?
Black Rock Falls is located about 30 km north of Kununurra. You’ll need a four-wheel drive as the terrain can be rough, especially after rain.
Getting there is very straightforward. From Kununurra, drive through Victoria Highway and take the Black Rock Pool turnoff. Keep driving through the Valentine Springs road until you reach the turnoff to Black Rock.
You can also get there from the Ivanhoe Crossing, via Parry Creek Road.
After parking, you’ll have to walk a short trek to the falls. The trail is uneven and rocky so bring sturdy shoes!
The roads may be closed after heavy rains and during the wet season, so always check the conditions before heading out.
When is the best time to visit Black Rock Falls?
The best time to visit Black Rock Falls is at the end of the wet season, in March-April.
This is when the waterfalls are at their most spectacular, with water cascading over the 30-metre black-stained rock face into the pool below.
You will need solid four-wheel driving skills to get there, as it will be very muddy due to the rains.
The second best time to visit would be in the first half of the dry season, from May to July. Even though there may be little to no water flowing, the waterhole will probably still be there for you to swim!
The natural pool slowly dries up as the dry season advances. However, the place is still worth visiting even without the pool.

At Black Rock Falls, you can:
Swim in the refreshing, crystal-clear pools below the 30-metre-high falls, which are especially inviting after a hot day of exploring.
4WD to the falls if you’re feeling adventurous.
Hike and explore the area, there’s a short trail that leads to the falls.
Enjoy a picnic in one of the shaded areas.
Consider visiting other awesome spots nearby, like Middle Springs, Valentine Springs, Secret Springs, Molly Springs, Lake Kununurra, and the Ivanhoe Crossing!
There aren’t any toilets in the area, though. You cannot camp there, park overnight, or bring dogs either. Keep that in mind when planning your visit.
Top Tips
The Kimberley heat, so bring water. It’s best to always pack more than you think you’ll need.
The waterhole is great for a dip, but watch out for slippery rocks around the edges. It can get a bit mossy, so bring reef shoes
Also, the roads have no artificial lighting. When the sun sets, it gets pitch black fast. Make sure you’re back on the road before dark unless you’re keen on navigating tricky roads in the dark.

This discolouration is mostly caused by algal growth that thrives on wet surfaces, especially during the wet season when the falls are in full flow.
