AlUla is one of the most exciting places to visit in Saudi Arabia.

Tucked away in the northwest side of the country, this desert town is packed with ancient history, natural beauty, and the most unique experiences.

You’ll find ancient landmarks like Hegra, massive formations like Elephant Rock, and even the world’s largest mirrored building!

And it has the clearest night sky ever because there’s so little light pollution! It will blow your mind.

We spent 2 days here and did pretty much everything on this list of things to do in AlUla… but we ended up absolutely exhausted!

4 days is definitely the sweet spot to do the main things and enjoy the vibe without feeling rushed.

Also, AlUla reflects the changes happening across Saudi Arabia.

As part of Vision 2030, the country is becoming more accessible and welcoming to international visitors. Women travellers, for example, aren’t required to wear hijabs!

Also, the town felt incredibly safe and the locals were so warm and welcoming. So as long as you respect the local customs (more on that below), you’ll have the time of your life.

10 Top things to do in AlUla

This is a truly special town, as it has one foot on ancient history and another on modern experiences! Here are the best things to do in AlUla:

1) Explore Hegra (Madain Saleh)

Hegra is an ancient Nabataean city that dates back to the 1st century BC! It features 111 rock-cut tombs carved into golden sandstone cliffs.

No wonder why it’s the crown jewel of AlUla and Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site!

Walking among these ruins feels a bit overwhelming – you’re surrounded by sooo much history! It’s incredible.

The only way to visit is by tour, though.

We explored Hegra on a vintage Land Cruiser tour and it was next-level amazing!

2) Visit the Maraya Building

Honestly, we’d go back to Saudi Arabia just to see the Maraya building again.

It’s the largest mirrored building in the world, blending seamlessly into the desert surroundings. The pictures can’t translate how awe-inspiring the whole structure is!

The sheer scale of this place is mind-blowing, and the setting makes it feel otherworldly. Give yourself ample time here, the way the light and reflections change throughout the day is mesmerising.

Inside, it hosts world-class cultural events, concerts, and art exhibitions. There’s also a fine dining restaurant there, but you need reservations to get there.

It’s a 20-minute drive from Al-Ula. Parking there is free but you have to pay a small fee if you want to enter the building.

3) Sunset at Elephant Rock

Elephant Rock is exactly what it sounds like – a massive sandstone formation that looks just like an elephant, trunk and all!

The setting is pure desert magic and visiting at sunset is a must. As the sun dips below the horizon, the sandstone glows golden-red, and the vibe is just unreal.

The place is free to visit and well-prepared for visitors – there are comfy seating areas and a food truck nearby!

You can also bring a drink or a snack, take a seat, and enjoy the views. Just make sure to arrive early so you can grab a spot.

4) Take a Hot Air Balloon Ride

If there’s one way to see AlUla in all its glory, it’s from above in a hot air balloon! It’s a bucket-list thing, hands down.

Few things compare to floating over the desert at sunrise. The endless sand dunes, rock formations, and morning light create views you won’t forget.

It starts VERY early, though – around 4:30-5:30 am – but believe us, it’s worth it! Plus, most operators include hotel pickup and dropoff.

It’s a very popular activity, so make sure to book in advance, especially during peak seasons.

5) Visit AlUla Oasis

The AlUla Oasis is a lush, green sanctuary in the heart of the desert, with over 2 million towering date palms! It’s a refreshing contrast to the surrounding desert.

There are a few charming cafes where you can grab a drink or try some locally grown dates.

The Oasis is free to enter and has a 6-km heritage trail that takes you around the area.

But we recommend doing the guided tour. You’ll learn more about the history and importance of the Oasis in local culture – from its role in agriculture to its historical significance as a vital stop on ancient trade routes.

6) Walk Through AlUla Old Town

Al-Ula Old Town is a fascinating maze of mudbrick houses, narrow streets, and vibrant markets. It was built in the 12th century, with some houses built in 600 AD!

It features over 900 houses and 400 shops, and it’s one of the most well-preserved examples of traditional mudbrick architecture in the Arabian Peninsula.

You’ll feel like walking through a time capsule!

There are stalls selling everything from spices to handmade crafts, and there are guided tours available if you want to dive deeper into the history.

Some of the restored buildings now house cosy cafes and boutique shops, perfect for a mid-walk snack or souvenir.

We recommend going in the late afternoon to avoid the heat and enjoy the market at its liveliest!

7) Dune Buggy adventure

We LOVED this! If you’re after some serious adrenaline, don’t sleep on this. Zipping across the sand dunes with the wind in your face is incredible!

We went with these guys and they were brilliant. They made us feel safe at all times and the guides knew the desert like the back of their hand.

Don’t wear your best clothes for this, though – you’ll be covered in sand by the end of it!

8) Stargaze in Gharameel Desert

AlUla is the first “Dark Sky Park” in Saudi Arabia. This means they go above and beyond to minimise light pollution so you can see the clearest night sky possible, as people did thousands of years ago.

And one of the best places to go stargazing is the Gharameel Desert, a 90-minute drive from AlUla.

With no light pollution, the stars look impossibly bright, and you might even catch the Milky Way stretching across the sky!

There are guided stargazing tours that include telescopes, comfy seating, and traditional snacks. It’s a peaceful, awe-inspiring way to spend an evening in the desert.

For those who like safaris, this is a must!

9) Safari at Sharaan Reserve

The Sharaan Reserve is a haven for all kinds of desert wildlife – ostriches, gazelles, hares, eagles, and more.

But if you want to make the visit truly unforgettable, consider booking a Safari Tour with Platinum Heritage – they provide a luxurious blend of wildlife adventure and fine dining.

10) Hike Jabal Ikmah

Jabal Ikmah is a unique archaeological site often referred to as an “open-air library” for its hundreds of ancient inscriptions carved into the rock.

These writings date back to pre-Nabataean times (i.e. thousands of years ago), providing a glimpse into the life and culture of those who lived in the region back then!

It’s free to enter and the hike around the area is about 2–3 kilometres, depending on your chosen route. Takes around 1.5–2 hours to complete.

The trail is moderately challenging, with uneven terrain and some rocky patches, so sturdy shoes are essential!

It’s best to visit early in the morning or late afternoon when the temperatures are cooler. Guided tours are available and highly recommended – they provide historical context you might miss on your own.

When is the best time to visit AlUla?

The best time to visit AlUla is between November and February, when the weather is cooler and much more comfortable for exploring.

Daytime temperatures range from 20–25°C, perfect for outdoor activities like hiking, dune buggying, and sightseeing.

Visiting during this period also lines up with AlUla’s peak tourism season, which means more tours, events, and experiences are available… But also that you’ll have to book everything well in advance!

The Winter at Tantora Festival, held annually between December and January, is a highlight worth planning your trip around. It’s a 3-week long festival that features music, art, and cultural events!

Avoid the summer months (June to August) when temperatures can soar above 40°C, making most outdoor activities unbearable.

What to pack for Al-Ula?

Saudi Arabia uses type G power sockets, like those in the UK, so you might want to bring a universal adapter to stay charged. Many hotels also offer USB charging points.

Cards are widely accepted in AlUla, especially in hotels and restaurants, but it’s a good idea to carry some Saudi Riyals (SAR) for smaller vendors, markets, or tipping guides!

We like to make things as easy as possible so this is the bank we use to exchange currencies worldwide and pay. It includes a free debit card and the exchange rates are excellent!

Clothing Essentials

Lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen are perfect for AlUla’s warm days. Loose-fitting clothes will keep you cool and comfortable.

Women should pack modest clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. You won’t need a hijab in most areas, but having a scarf handy is smart for visits to traditional or religious spots.

Maxi skirts, wide-leg pants, and loose dresses are great options. Bikinis are fine in private spaces but not in public areas.

As for men, short-sleeved shirts and long trousers are ideal for most outings. Shorts are acceptable but should fall below the knees to avoid standing out.

How to get to AlUla from Australia

There are no direct flights from Australia to AlUla.

You’ll need to transit through major hubs in the Middle East like Dubai, Abu Dhabi, etc. to get to Riyadh (Saudi’s capital) or Jeddah (the main tourist town).

From either one of those cities, you can catch a connecting flight to Prince Abdul Majeed Bin Abdulaziz Domestic Airport (ULH) in AlUla.

Flights typically take around 18–26 hours, depending on layover durations. Once you land in AlUla, the main town is about a 25-minute drive from the airport, and most hotels offer airport transfer services.

Visa Requirements for Australians

Australians need a tourist visa to enter Saudi Arabia, but it’s a quick and simple process. You can apply for an eVisa online through the official Saudi eVisa portal.

Requirements include:

• A passport valid for at least 6 months from your entry date.

• Travel insurance (mandatory for visa approval, we always use this travel insurance).

Once your visa is approved, it will be emailed to you. Keep both a digital and printed copy with you!

How many days to stay in AlUla?

4 days in AlUla is the sweet spot, so you can do all of the things in this list without feeling rushed.

We spent 2 full days and we did pretty much everything we mentioned above, but ended up EXHAUSTED. We don’t recommend it.

Where to eat in AlUla?

• Somewhere Restaurant AlUla ($$ – $$$) Surrounded by towering palms, this oasis spot serves dishes like beetroot rice, wagyu baos’, and kale tabouli. It’s our favourite place to eat, with its relaxing terrace dining and warm, friendly service.
• Entrecôte Café de Paris ($$ – $$$) This spot offers excellent food and service with seating options that include views of the old town, the mountains, or a cosy indoor French-inspired setting. It’s a bit pricey but well worth the experience.
• Pink Camel Pastry Boutique ($$ – $$$) Known for its delicious pastries and relaxing outdoor seating by the oasis, this spot offers great vibes and good service. It’s a bit pricey but highly recommended if you’re in the area.
• Shrimp Nation ($$ – $$$) This cosy spot in AlUla serves fresh, flavourful seafood like shrimp and lobster in a welcoming atmosphere. Friendly staff and great hospitality make it a standout for seafood lovers.
• Zalata ($$ – $$$) This warm, welcoming spot serves high-quality dishes, including the standout spicy tameez, a local favourite. The friendly service and cosy atmosphere make it a place you’ll want to revisit.

Best stays in AlUla

We recommend taking the opportunity to check into a traditional mudbrick housing such as Dar Tantora, “The House Hotel”.

We stayed there and it’s one of the most unique accommodations we’ve ever been to – the whole place uses candles instead of lightbulbs!

And the rooms have a small open area for private stargazing. It’s absolutely gorgeous! More info on The House Hotel here.

There are also caravan, camping, budget, and super luxury hotel options. Here are some suggestions:

Top Tips

Alcohol is strictly forbidden in Saudi Arabia. Tourists caught consuming or possessing it can face severe consequences, including deportation. It’s best to avoid even discussing it openly.

Additionally, public displays of affection, such as kissing or hugging, are frowned upon and can attract unwanted attention.

For LGBTQ+ travellers, it’s important to exercise caution. Sadly, Saudi Arabia has strict laws regarding LGBTQ+ rights, and openly expressing your identity can be very unsafe.

Finally, while AlUla is relatively relaxed compared to other parts of Saudi Arabia, dressing modestly is still expected.

Did you know?

Historically, AlUla served as a resting point for pilgrims travelling along the Hijaz Railway to Mecca and Medina.
